Introduction

There are a number of reasons your website might not be getting the traffic you want. It might be due to poor design, technical issues, or any other number of factors. While a perfect traffic recipe doesn't exist, there are a few things that could be holding you back. Here are 3 common reasons you might not be getting the traffic you want. Let's dive in!

1. You Don't Get Website Traffic Because You Aren't Utilizing Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is vital for getting organic traffic to your website. Using good SEO practices (or at least any SEO practices at all!) can make the difference between getting a few users a month to thousands. How? Because search engines like Google put your website in the top few spots of a search phrase where people most often click. There are a ton of different ways to your search results, some of which I've already detailed in this article. I'll include a checklist of the basics below to get started.

2. Unresponsive Design

Mobile users account for over half of most internet traffic. If your website only works on a desktop, you are cutting off half your customer base. This not only leads to the organic traffic you do get on mobile being useless, but leads to high bounce rates. We talked about high bounce rates last time, and they are not great for traffic!

Ensure that your website design is responsive for various mobile devices, tablet devices, and general screen sizes. This will ensure those who visit the site are able to interact with it in all the ways you want to promote, and reduce high bounce rates which can be very negative to your overall traffic impact.

3. Slow Loading Times Are Preventing Your Ability To Get Website Traffic

Have you ever tested how long it takes to load your homepage? If not, that's alright! You can start now. There are a number of tools that will do this for you, my favorite being PageSpeed Insights.

If your website takes more than just a few seconds to load, odds are a huge percentage of your traffic will click off immediately. Here's a great article explaining why this is and how to stop it. A few examples of reducing page loading speed are using webp/avif images, compressing images to reduce filesize, and minifying HTML, CSS, and JS files for speedier code.

However you want to go about it, ensuring you get your load speeds to be as quick as possible will ensure you are retaining the attention of visitors, and not losing them before they are even able to interact with or see your site.

Being informed about the ways your website can be improved is the first step towards fixing it.
